From the top of Simplicius' article; it appears that we're in a place in which a direct comparison to ancient Rome (and many, many others) can again be made:
(My own and not his interpretation) The Leadership has allowed a woman to stand in temporarily, as any change would cause a civil war, therefore carrying on as-is is what's best for now.
This is not true, of course. What's best is what we see has happened, many many times.
The new power came in and killed everyone standing in opposition. That's the reality of history. It's why I've stated "many many". It's happened over and over and over.
If a People, in this case the oppressed subjects of an empire actively trying to replace them with an invading force seeking only the free-for-all of looting and pillage - if a People cannot decide amongst themselves whom they wish to lead them...
...then the Winner will take control and kill the opposition. This is History.
This is both a very dangerous place to be as well as exactly the place we've been saying we would be in.
History is cyclical. You either learn from the mistakes of the past, or you repeat them.
