I've got some news about office environments. The absolute worst part for me was dealing with the rampant gossip and laziness. People would chat all day, accomplish next to nothing, and then pretend they were some kind of heroes for staying late. People walk around, take lunch or bathroom breaks, attend meetings, etc. Office or Home people will walk around. Stop writing stupid stories to promote back-to-office culture and risk everyone’s health.
@nixCraft Office work be like: - let's grab another tea/coffee (0.5 hour passes) - OK, I guess we should do some working (until the next tea/coffee break that is)
This is what people in the office are doing all day.
@nixCraft only problem is that rampant gossiping and laziness still exist whilst working from home.... I know of literally hundreds of examples and it is so harder to control when not in an office environment. Not saying you haven't got a point but it happens both ways
@nixCraft I found that employees who didn't appear to be working at home were the same employees who weren't doing their work at the office; in fact in some cases they'd be more distracted at work, and worse, would often distract other employees.
@nixCraft a friend's company is now interfering with her ability to buy a home by refusing to sign a letter that she works remotely. Companies are insane.
@nixCraft I know for a fact I got more done working remotely, without the pointless meetings and the endless socializing. This obsession with people working “constantly” is such a symptom of the problem.
@nixCraft at least my employer decided to close all offices except the HQ, so that they have somewhere to meet customers and potential customers, I just think it was stupid to keep the current office, it's "big" and meant for a couple of hundred workers, now it's like 10 workers who are there and if you have visitors they may think it's going badly for the company to see so much empty space.
Sure there are times I do other things, but still I may be trying to figure out a better solution...
@nixCraft Remote work tools such as chatrooms and videoconferencing also enables gossip & laziness. It's more a matter of what's the company culture. Remote or Office is a small detail. I prefer working at the office, but all others in my team are remote.
@nixCraft I’m way more productive working from home & do with home/garden maintenance for breaks. If go physically to campus (other than teaching time), it’s 1hr return trip, then chat to friends, go for coffee, have a swim, whinge about HR & computer illiterate students, attend pointless online meetings. I go by choice 2-3 days a week, but only because job is completely flexible and I can leave or wander around as I please. Took 4 decades of shitty jobs & multiple degrees to get this though
In the office, on-site, you validated that you are working by our presence.
So you can literally spend as much time as you want doing non-work stuff, gossip, …
Extra points if you manage to take naps.
Now in a remote working situation, obviously, that status if you are working is evaluated by your work output. So yeah, you can still do other things, but you have to self-police, so at the end of the day, you can show plausible output.
