At issue is the idea of catching and training weird animals, that Nintendo asserts it stole fair and square from DragonQuest.
Japanese patent law is a bit weird and unlike western patents, so whether they have a case or not is uncertain. One major problem for Nintendo is that Pocketpair now has a billion dollars to fund its defense.

@Aether it's gonna be in Japan tho
Japan are the most animalistic hebrew bugmen bureaucrats in existence and their common law regarding patents and ip does not adhere or resemble anything close to other nations, in fact they put Israel to shame with how draconian their courts are and how their large companies are ran more like yakuza rings
A few years ago Capcom was able to sue the Dynasty warrior devs over an enemy sensor patent in Japan, a game mechanic where your controller starts to rumble if an enemy is close. The courts agreed this infringes on Capcom's patent and tecmo had to pay like 1 and a half million in fines
Nintendo is called Japan's biggest Yakuza ring for a reason. Extremely ogre for pallworld
