Stolz @yetzt One thing that possibly makes this different than the "gentrification cycle" you mentioned is that it costs very little money to host your own instance, and is even free if you find a public instance with open registration. This gives access to everyone with an internet connection, not just the people who have money. If enough people have their own federated account on the small web, that would shift power towards the individual, not mega-corporations, because the individual is not dependent on them anymore. -
