Microsoft Authenticator needs your phone number and sends data back to Microsoft. If you're on Linux, macOS, or similar, there's a simpler way! oathtool does the same 2FA job, right from your terminal, and keeps your info private. The only compromise is not having Microsoft notifications, which although I can live without with my own account, it's required for my work account.
