The reason for the censorship isn't to stop ideas from spreading. The Streisand effect ensures this will never work. The real reason for the censorship is to sever communication so that people are arguing with imaginary enemies rather than actually resolving problems.

All it does is pushes people into echo-chambers and it just makes both sides think they are right about everything, leaving little to no room for a third-way or middle ground.
You also have what I call the "forbidden fruit fallacy" where people think that only the ideas that are heavily censored are the correct ones.
