   @pimoore @mull yeah, I think @aral, who has a similar number of followers as me hosts with Masto.Host, so maybe he can give an actual example.

     @kev My instance was there, recently moved to @jan’s toot.io and it’s been very smooth and Jan’s been awesome. It’s a VPS setup and the difference between 4 sidekick threads and 25 is huge (that was one of my main bottlenecks). I’m on the €49/mo plan.

     (Hugo, who runs Masto.host, is awesome too and Laura’s instance is still there. It’s just not a good fit if you have the number or followers I have and you actively use it and can get quite a bit of engagement.)

     @kev @mull I noticed a lot of this weird behaviour when i had one as well. In addition, I’ve read several posts that even a single user instance can grow in requirements — this becoming even costlier — as it federates with more accounts. Especially true if you build up a large group of followers, in turn linking and boosting your content.

     @pimoore @mull it can. When I spoke to Hugo from Masto.host, he said that if I were to get 10k followers (I have 23k on Fosstodon, so not out of the realms of possibility) it would cost around $50/m because of the resources needed.

     I had pretty much the same experience as @mull when I tried a single user instance. I just don’t think Masto is geared for that kind of usage.

     Of course there’s many people happily using Masto as a single user, and more power to them, I just missed the community vibe from a larger server, like Fosstodon.
