@rher @not_benis @Myles To deny the political nature of many of the papacy's actions in the past, and even now, is to deny realty. The church isn't just the pope, he isn't the whole church, just the head of it. It would be like judging the actions of the Byzantine Empire solely based on the Emperor's actions it ignores the institution as a whole.
Rome can be good and sometimes misstep. E-Catholics have the unfortunate tendency to be unironic Papists, a position of ignorance and taking statements, political in nature, from the church at face value, only a small fraction of whatever comes out of St. Peter's is legitimately infallible or dogmatic in any sense.
All churches, even the one which has the seat of Peter, are human run institutions. Real-politik doesn't stop happening just because the institution is a church.

Be Medieval Catholic Grug. Try to be a good person, go to confession, receive the Eucharist, and don't worry too much about what's going on in Rome.
