     @mischievoustomato @declarer7 It really is the best. Nobody appreciates how much breadth english has relative to everything else. Everything has 3 to 17 synonyms

     @supersid333 @mischievoustomato @declarer7 I had a poast here from an old spanish poet talking about what he loves about english.

     We have a real malleable tongue, where it's totally acceptable to make up a word, smash things together, be funny and play with it. That doesn't work in others, I've talked about it with a lot of expats and they all have that moment where they're trying to be funny, and they get a quizzical "uh that's not a word"

     Like "edutainment", you know what it is just from hearing it. It's a silly term but it works. Everyone else has to agree on codifying a loanword (from english, inevitably) and disseminating it via dictionary

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @mischievoustomato @declarer7 Other countries would agree I guess. A lot of Korean and Japanese songs like sprinkling in those english loan words/phrases like a spice.

     @mischievoustomato @declarer7 It's a great language, everyone hates it when learning but once you've got it down you end up loving the complexity - it's a mark of pride, something to laugh at when dummies whine about how tough it is

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @mischievoustomato @declarer7 i get that feeling about other languages too but i chock it up to me just not knowing how to use them right. idk. like spanish the syntax looks and feels limited. again I figure it's because I don't actually know any lol.

     @suquili @mischievoustomato @declarer7 Well, that's because it is. When you have to translate documents from flowery english you realize just how many words lack a direct analog in spanish. They have the latin ones, at least, which makes it easy to learn if you have a good vocab in english, but they just don't have the same body that english does.

     Like if you're buying clothing, there isn't a word that really equals "downy", they have velvety, and silky, but not downy. When you talk about the loft, describing the fill of a jacket, the adjective is "spongy"

     @supersid333 @mischievoustomato @declarer7 English just gives everyone admin authority to make new words though. It's why our slang moves so fast, and why nearly every new loan word in the world is taken from english

     The cool thing about english is that you have such breadth in voice. You can get to the same idea with three different sentences, each one betraying a different character from one another. Druggie, doctor, cop, each has his own toolkit that's set apart from the others.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @declarer7 i never hated learning it because i recognized it as an important language (due to computers. i got my first laptop when i was 6, and cousins preloaded it with games and shit, many if not most were in english so i just... learned it)

     @mischievoustomato @declarer7 My company used to get angry with me because I wouldn't tap their worthless american translators to get the job done, I'd just find some local kid who learned good enough english (watching family guy usually) and pay him to be the go-between when we had the med teams come in from the states.

     Way better than having some roastie w/ a bachelor's in ESL speech therapy trying to go-between for indios
