Lmao. Does AI actually help students learn? A recent experiment in a high school provides a cautionary tale. Kids who use ChatGPT as a study assistant do worse on tests https://hechingerreport.org/kids-chatgpt-worse-on-tests/ Tell me again what ChatGPT is good for? It generated bad code. It doesn't give credit. It steals from artists. It uses a max amount of energy. It's causing job loss. I guess parents now need to block ChatGPT at the DNS level.
Imagine a scenario 10 or 20 years from now where many data centers go dark due to a cyberattack or a natural event like a solar flare or heavy flooding. How are these kids going to solve problems if they don't even know basic math formulas? Can they even write five sentences on paper? Technology is wonderful, but it has its own limitations. No wonder many professors reject papers or homework if they suspect students used LLM. These teachers know limitations very well.
@vivideo Parents and teachers can guide students. Everyone should know basic math. I say teach them personal finance and cyber security, too. Kids are smart. All they need is proper guidance, a bit of discipline, and more time playing offline instead of sitting in front of mobile devices browsing TikTok or using ChatCPT. Of course, you can't ignore technology, but limited screen time is essential. I guess it now all comes down to personal parenting, and my opinion may not be popular. YMMV.
@nixCraft I think it can help as "personal teacher". Not as " answer me wizard" type of learning. If it can be trained to only give explanations in math, formats and not direct answers
But who knows - maybe thanks to technological advances those issues will not pose any threat in the future?…
I’ve been thinking a lot about it as well and the more I think of it - the less I’m concerned. It’s just future. Wozniak’s boss at HP asked him why the hell would ordinary people need computers back in a day…
Everything changes - the question is what will our average human intelligence allow us to do with the new tools 🤔
@nixCraft While kids who put in minimal effort may struggle, those who read books, do exercises, and use AI to clarify concepts they don't understand from teachers can thrive. I've seen examples where AI can explain a subject from different angles. Teachers may become obsolete like many other jobs in the future.
@nixCraft On a complete side note, I play a Real Musical Instrument that will still work when the lights go out. Some of my peers will stop making music when that happens, 'cause their tools will stop working.
@nixCraft Nobody using ChatGPT in school cares about their education (or at least, not about those aspects of it that require tests). Having recently finished college I can assure you that anyone who used ChatGPT would have bunked class anyways, it's the same old story over and over again - those who don't care will cheat without concern for the long-term affects on their education.
@nixCraft Al these high-level languages are going to be the death of us all. When the compilers and spreadsheets start failing you - and they will - who will be around to write your programs? Give me that old time assembler! Eh? Speak up there youngster!
