Euros love mass transit because they have no problem wasting 2 hours of every day getting small loads of groceries and waiting around for a late train. Vehicles empower hobbies, too. Your car gives you freedom and access to all kinds of stuff you can't really do with mass transit (mountain biking, shooting, kayaking, kiting, trail running come to mind here)
It's a fundamentally different approach to life, where euros are just tacitly accepting of being subjects (not an entirely bad thing for them, but not 'US') versus americans instinctively demanding captainship over their lives
