     defederation means you /reject incoming posts/. thats (not quite, but mostly) it lol; it hides things

     @victor your instance will not deliever them directly, no. but instances deliver the posts of other instances to each other all the time, its how the network works

     @errante I suppose not, because I thought if I defederate from an instance that my posts would no longer deliver to the instance I defederated from. Is that not the case?

     @victor for instance, if a user i follow likes a post from a server that defederates me, i still receieve that post, because the user who i'm following's server sends the post, not the server from which it originated

     @victor in the case of some fedi software, defederation doesnt actually stop the server from sending posts. someone blocked my instance after petty drama, but their posts still appeared and were sent to my timeline, because theres a distinction between 'defederate' (not recieve posts) and 'quarantine' (not send posts). mastodon merges them, and neither of them help in this current scenario

     @victor the only way to make 100% sure that amerika or anyone you defed doesnt see it is to create a new whitelist portion of the network that doesnt federste with anyone who isnt in the portion

     @victor its not dumb, its how the protocol woeks. its be dumber id it had to fetch from.the OG instance every time, because thats unreliable. whats dumb here is mastodon not knowing how to group things into threads, also - pleroma would have shown that my post was a reply to a status, but that the status was unavailable

     @errante that all makes sense the way you explained it, and I find that to be dumb, and agree with you that from my point of view it’s not helpful…it just resulted in receiving an @ mention reply from you with zero context as to what toot you were replying to 🙄

     @victor we are a controversial instance. all of us are gay. we dont defederate /anyone/. you can defederate if you want - a lot of blocklists do lie however. im not a fascist, im not queerphobic (im in a gay relationship with the other admon), and i certainly dont allow csam.

     @errante I’m sorry, what I meant was dumb is how Mastodon doesn’t detail why I couldn’t see what you were replying to as you just outlined here in regards to threads, and how pleroma better handles it.

     I’ve not come across anyone from rot.gives before speaking to you, but I see the domain listed on plenty of defederation lists. Do you think that status is warranted, or a misunderstanding? I don’t like to assume the judgments of others is accurate, but I don’t want to see hate filled posts…?
