Laptops from System76 and Framework are always advertising that they work well with Linux, but that's NOTHING compared to this.

Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 05:41:44 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ the funny thing about this computer? it's one of the first ones I've seen at ewaste that has CLEARLY been opened up to take the hard drive out.
why is that funny? it doesn't have a hard drive. This is a solid state/floppy PC, no hard drive included.

Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 06:07:21 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ So this was a computer designed for people who just needed something cheap to do word processing and the like. The details on the specs are rare, but apparently it has 5 megabyte of ROM, 4 megabyte of RAM, and 1 megabyte of flash storage.
Since this is the NB-80C, it's got a 10.4" 640x480 color LCD. (the NB-60 has a 9.4" 640x480 greyscale LCD) -

-
Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 06:30:36 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ nope. it doesn't seem to boot off floppies.
But I was able to use the command.com from it to finally check the memory. Yep, 4mb.

Jonathan ‘theJPster’ Pallant (thejpster@hachyderm.io)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:24:56 JST Jonathan ‘theJPster’ Pallant @foone how does a PS/2 mouse know a Serial adapter has been plugged in? Do they put a Serial signal into an otherwise unused pin?
-
Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:24:56 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ @thejpster Something like that, yeah. Or they wire it so that if they're plugged into PS/2 they get power on a different pin, so they can tell which one is plugged in

Cumberland Gorch (crobbler@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:26:14 JST Cumberland Gorch @foone I think it might just barely be able to run Doom. Minimum requirements are 4mb 386
-
Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:26:14 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ @crobbler the fun part is that the main reason it can't run doom is a lack of HARD DRIVE space! there's nowhere you could install Doom to!
-
Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:28:46 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ it's also got a PCMCIA port. so maybe I could shove an ethernet card in there

Foone🏳️⚧️ (foone@digipres.club)'s status on Saturday, 24-Aug-2024 07:51:21 JST Foone🏳️⚧️ the manual implies that the PCMCIA slot is only for storage. So far it hasn't liked any of the cards I've put in it.

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi (apzpins@mstdn.games)'s status on Sunday, 25-Aug-2024 08:42:40 JST Ari [APz] Sovijärvi @foone Nokia used Geos on their early Communicator phones too. I think until 9210. It was neat to break one into command.com too. Also managed to get a Linux kernel running, but the keyboard had something funky in those and it only worked over serial connection.
