@mimorinka nerd, geek and such are words that have vaguely changed meaning in 40 years. But I suppose translating it to Otaku is good enough? Then again, that's also a word whose perception of it has changed a lot, haven't it?

I agree with that , more to say definition of "Otaku" has been changed since 20 years ago .
for old Otaku that means someone who reproduce something(doujinshi or just fan art whatever) from what he crazy about.
recently Otaku losts their very meanings, nowdays are just consumer because most Japanese watch popular animes and that's all, became just a traits of someone's personality.
-
@mimorinka I'd argue that it's the same. Nerd also lost it's meaning. Everyone is a "nerd" now somehow. Stuff like Marvel comics movies are big box office. It's not a small hardcore crowd anymore
-
@mimorinka In the end, if everyone is a nerd/otaku, then nobody is
I recently saw the Japanese wiki article for "Yuri" and it also seemed to be very, very broad of a definition

I never new the origin of otaku, very interesting as in English it's just used to refer to someone obsessed with Japanese media. More often used for Japs, foreigners are more likely to be called weeaboos or just weebs. Though weeb has lost the negative connotation that it originally had.

Nerd is often used in conjunction with the specific topic that the person is unusually interested and knowledgeable about; math nerd, Marvel nerd, harmonica nerd, etc. I don't think I've heard anyone use the word geek in the past 5 years. In that use case it still retains the fact that the person is outside of the norm. Simply getting a (even quite high) math education doesn't make you a math nerd, it connotes enthusiasm and undue or unexpected knowledge.
