I decided to write off that VM as lost, and create a new one. Created a new VM with a fresh new virtual hard drive, pointed it at my Windows XP ISO, and.... same message on boot up.
So it seems that *any* VM is immediately failing with an unspecified "critical error"
Wonder what the hell that's about

Still weird, though, that VirtualBox 6 would just randomly decide to not work anymore with perfectly-good VM that ran just fine the day before 🤷♀️
