@firecat which macbook is available for 850 EUR?
@mntmn it cost the same as a Mac, you really need a very good reason besides speed and open source.
@kine @firecat I don't see that model in the Apple shop though?
Technically the gen 1 MacBook Air base models with M1 chip. But thats like saying that I could get a Steamdeck even cheaper. All products that one could use for a few common use cases but were intended to be good at completely different things.
@janantos @kine @firecat if the aspect of openness (open hardware with sources that you can clone, modify, fix) is worth nothing to you, and the fact that we are a tiny team of less than 10 people hand assembling these in germany is meaningless to you, then perhaps
@kine @mntmn @firecat Also to put it on par you will need to opt for RK3588 cpu which I believe is still not comparable to M1 but in that case it will definitively be on price tag of decent Mac. But also on par with framework laptops. In this perspective it is fairly overpriced gadget. Not mentioning fact that RK3588 is not most performing piece of silicon introduced about 3 yo ago.
@mntmn @firecat
Apple wants to sell only their shiny new products on their own website of course but M1 can still be bought new from a lot of stores in the web or probably some retailers in the US too.
But I'd rather think about what I could need a Pocket Reform for (given the limited amount of time I have available for tinkering atm)... Too bad!
@mntmn big big 🧡✨👩💻
@janantos @kine @firecat that's not true! you cannot clone/build your own framework laptop because they do not publish the electronics sources and also use lots of custom parts that you can't easily get! they don't even have schematics for the motherboard. framework products are _not_ open hardware.
@mntmn @kine @firecat well openness also apply to framework laptops ;-) to my understanding you still need binary blobs so technically your base model is somehow comparable to 200 USD pinebook pro ;-) where I have from sw perspective same openness, most likely very similar binary blobs and also availability of spare parts. Just missing modularity and hw keyboard. That doesn’t say, that your gadget isn’t cool.
@janantos @kine @firecat that isn't the case either. Our PCBs are designed so you can cheaply get them from companies like JLC, PCBway, or in europe @aislerhq! You can 3D print the cases. And if you still don't believe me, check out this MNT Reform that was independently cloned by @jacqueline in Australia: https://mntre.com/media/reform_md/2022-07-01-july-update.html#more-great-mods-from-the-community-and-beyond
@mntmn @kine @firecat Fair point but technically you can’t build it at home neither, given the high complexity of how many PCB layers (6-8)? and even more complex soldering. So yeas we can see the PCB source files, but majority of us can’t do anything with it.
@mntmn Awesome news, although must admit that I'm a little ambivalent - if I had a little patience and waited for this, rather than pre-ordering via CrowdSupply, I might be able to get it at around the same time, but with more refined options...
In any case (pun not intended), I have a few items in my basket now, and am excited :)
@shigeru yes
@mntmn Are you going to offer RK3588 upgrade kit for Pocket Reform on CrowdSupply also?
@mariu5 here are some examples:
https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/pocket-reform/updates/pocket-reform-goes-to-work
https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/pocket-reform/updates/kick-back-and-chill-with-pocket-reform
@mntmn What do people use something like this for?
@mntmn Nice, crowd supply said they will shipped my order once this batch arrived their warehouse. Gotta order rk3588/32G ram upgrade kit.
@mntmn that doesn't have a mouse
