   did someone already find a way to simplify KiCAD STEP models so that FreeCAD doesn't get incredibly slow under their load?

     it took several minutes of loading and waiting and cursor spinning and eating up all my ram to get to this techdraw view... (on an intel i9 9900k)

     @mntmn Uh, it's been a hot minute since I did this, iirc I used MeshLab to simplify the model to a limited number of polygons.

     That helped a lot.

     @mntmn If you open up a copy of your design in the nightly builds (8.99) you can choose to export only selected components rather than all components. You can then select the critical components (connectors, tall stuff, etc) and leave behind all the small passives.

     @mntmn I feel your pain. Alas I am not providing a solution. As to the other commenter: Don't forget to design in space between connectors, buttons and dials for operators with large hands wearing winter gloves. And don't forget to consider spacing in the Z dimension if this is racked between two other pieces of gear. These things are hard to visualize in CAD because we can zoom in cad. Zooming doesn't help in meat-space to fit fingers in tight spaces :-)
