   @Eiregoat @tyler Only in the postwar era is a nation rich enough in fact to make the entire aircraft braking surface.....then again in those days they figured the planes only needed to last a few years. When you look at in and out of service dates, they tended to get rid of planes pretty quick. Along those lines, you can afford to use the thing's body as a braking surface

   Plus they had plenty of rubber from their colonies back then. so the deck must not have been a big deal. Maybe.....I would bet this was meant to slot in as an expedient or model-specific solution of some type.

     This is such a weird concept. I'd be interested to hear what @tyler and @WashedOutGundamPilot think of it. The idea was that with a flexible deck, aircraft wouldn't need landing gear.
     
     It was eventually ditched. I can't find any details on why but I'm guessing it would have been too difficult to have aircraft that couldn't land on conventional runways.
