@arstechnica It's just the CPU technically. Earlier chips that they refuse to be bothered to patch still could be replaced with newer chips in many cases. Even in a worst case you can keep your storage media if all else has to be changed. That's the advantage of PCs versus things with soldered in parts.
That said, it is pretty inexcusable the way AMD and Intel are both kind of abandoning people on some of this stuff lately. Neither has great solutions for things that should be simple by now
