In light of the recent attack on the chudbuds.lol admin, which caused the instance to close, I am making several important changes to how FSE operates. These changes are intended to improve the security of the site.
:indiancallcenter: I have doubled FSE's call center staff. :mcafeesmug: I have installed WINE on the server to run McAfee Antivirus. :finksmug: FSE will be launching a new diversity initiative. :cia: You will all be dosed with experimental hallucinogens and then left at a bus station to see what happens. :chinogun: FSE is now a gun-free zone. :biden2: The server to wear mask at all times to stop the spread for TWO WEEKS :helpcomputer: unplug computer :ban: A different furry will be instance-blocked every hour. :campbellai: ChatGPT will have the final word in decisions about bans. :relaxer: I will develop psychokinesis. :heymateyougottaloicense: Proof of BBC license fees required in order to view posts. :thankyou: drimk fluoride :snake: This is a sneaking mission. :exe: Minecraft mods are banned. :hellthread: The hellthreads will continue until morale improves. :putingoggles: Everyone is assumed to be a Russian hacker. :globalistlocated: A U.N. Peacekeeping Force will be deployed to curb the warfare between the Hutus and Tustsis. :lainstress: Everyone is required to love lain. :davidkoreshwat: Religious extremists to be executed by the FBI. :laughingman: I thought what I'd do was, I'd become one of those deaf-mutes. :kazpw2: Age hasn't slowed you down one bit. :metroid: The last metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace. :olmusky: This page best viewed in Netscape Navigator at 800x600. :misatocalling: It's not creepy if a chick does it. :terryshades: Run them over with your car. :hmrichard: Question number one: Do you like hurting other people? :msf: Welcome to Outer Heaven!
@sysrq This is only a temporary measure until everyone forgets what it was like before and becomes completely dependent on FSE's security apparatus, at which point I will pretend that it was not a temporary measure.
@p I'm at the bar and showed this to my mate and we questioned if you could run McAfee through wine and I don't know but we discovered dell is chaotic Screenshot_20230307-184516.png
@oxblood@p i was never able to use it because it will hard-lock the entire OS if you have another service that uses a particular (fairly cmmon) kernel feature.
@coolboymew@oxblood@p it almost completely only detects windows viruses lol. you might want an antivirus on a linux server to scan your product's users' uploads or something. before i stopped sysadminning theough we were being harassed that every linux box had to have antivirus even if it did nothing
@coolboymew@oxblood@p it works close to the same as windows antivirus, it hooks into the kernel and detects when an executable is launched and first checks a hash of the executable file against a list of known bad hashes
@Moon@oxblood@p@coolboymew Yeah, pretty much the only reason people use Anti-Viruses on linux is to avoid spreading them out to Windows machines (and I guess Androids now?).
I guess something like snort/fail2ban and hardening your system (ie. noexec on most mountpoints and /home + /srv) would make more sense on Unix machines.
@lanodan@oxblood@p@coolboymew i already forgot all the standards i had to comply with but yes literally all the stuff you would expect like you mentioned is in a couple of those standards and you have to do them firrst. however a couple of them also say "every" system has to run antivirus so you're stuck trying to find antivirus for linux. had to get rid of clamav because it would use up all memory and then oomkiller would kill our application
@p@oxblood@lanodan@Moon@coolboymew anti virus is just another name for trying to protect the user from themselves. Education is the cure, AV just masks the symptoms.
> however a couple of them also say "every" system has to run antivirus so you're stuck trying to find antivirus for linux.
Terrible corporate policy sounds like the only reason to ever install such a thing. It seems like that would have been a great time to become a small-time antivirus vendor. "Yeah, these guys don't bog down the systems and they cost half as much!"
@dynamin@oxblood@p@Moon@coolboymew Pretty much but it's also very much a windows being a litteral minefield to try to operate securely, like not showing file extensions and encouraging double clicks, permitting execution from any filesystem, …
