As a non-Muslim, you have no difficulty understanding how the Muslims converted 1/6 (or whatever) of the world. The lands they conquered were inhabited by peoples who had never before encountered a proselytizing religion or the doctrine of hellfire. They were less attached to their own gods and customs than the conquerors were for theirs.

And secondly, the conquering Muslim armies managed to establish a fairly functional and stable form of government, and established alms-giving as a moral virtue.
