Apple’s venerable SuperDrive DVD burner may finally be fading away
Other DVD drives are cheap and plentiful, but Apple's slot-loader was unique.

@arstechnica Meh I have a plastic shelled clone of Apple’s that cost $10 off AliExpress and I’ve only needed it twice.
@arstechnica Slot loaders are hardly a new thing. They've been around in various forms for ages. They have some disadvantages and very little extra convenience though. It saves you like two seconds versus putting it in a tray or on a spindle but the rollers can smear or get dust on the discs and it's a bit harder to get a good grip on the disc when it spits it out. There is a reason everyone else generally used something else. Really, in the end, trayloaders are still the best.
