New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 19:59:42 JST New Janny in Town @Zergling_man I'm talking about my GPU, it's spinning but when I plug the HDMI it doesn't load the screen, only when I plugged it in the motherboard it loads. -

New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:02:53 JST New Janny in Town @Zergling_man indeed, now I wonder what I should do. -
Zergling_man (zergling_man@sacred.harpy.faith)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:04:04 JST Zergling_man @MK2boogaloo Install drivers?
I guess also check that the slot's not dusty but drivers are more suspect and less hassle.New Janny in Town likes this. -
New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:04:27 JST New Janny in Town @Zergling_man already installed both the open source AMD drivers and the proprietary one. -
Zergling_man (zergling_man@sacred.harpy.faith)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:06:22 JST Zergling_man @MK2boogaloo Proprietary AMD drivers still exist?
If you have them both installed at once that's probably an issue. Although I guess they should be marked as conflict if they cause conflict issues.New Janny in Town likes this. -
New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:06:36 JST New Janny in Town @Zergling_man yes. It's even stated that for this card (RX 560) it's better to use proprietary drivers. Last time, I used the open source driver for my last card, also AMD, it went fine. -
EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:24:10 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man regardless of driver choice, what happens when you try to boot?

New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:26:13 JST New Janny in Town @EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man okay so I boot it up with the HDMI plugged to the GPU, nothing shows up. But the fan is spinning. I shut it down using the power supply, boot it up again with the HDMI plugged to the motherboard and everything went well. -
EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:27:32 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man i will assume arch since you could have been scamemed into using arch.
so let's take another guess, grub works but after grub loads the kernel and some kernel initialization text is displayed (if you don't got the quiet flag along the log level 3) you get a black screen, no nothing just #000000 black all over the screen, just out of curioisity using the "nomodeset" kernel flag makes video work?

New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:28:22 JST New Janny in Town @EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man yes I'm using Arch. No, nothing shows up, not even the grub. About the kernel flag, I don't even know what that is. -
EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:29:14 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man huh weird, but could still be related to what i wrote on my other comment, were you able to get x11 running already? if so do you get accelerated video or is it defaulting to vesa?

New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:30:18 JST New Janny in Town @EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man so like a week or so ago, this went fine. The GPU worked flawlessly, but one day I boot my PC up and it has been like this ever since. -

just out of curiosity, if you try to boot the machine with an ubuntu live usb what happens? does it exhibit the same behaviour?

EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:31:59 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man @MK2boogaloo i'm thinking it could be either power OR some bios/uefi setting that is malformed and or gives the wrong information to the kernel.

EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:37:09 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man welp, get fucked because i was thinking that the problem you got also sounds an awful similar to the malformed firmware rom information caused by the spec non compliant uefi implementations of modern board manufacturers.
as there are some uefi settings that do fuck up the data that the kernel reads for the gpu hardware, first and foremost legacy boot as the implementations from most manufacturers are shit, so you need to use uefi boot strictly, then the fastboot/fast start up/super fast start up that are put in many boards, even non laptop ones have been documented to cause malformed data.

New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:38:22 JST New Janny in Town @EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man so the fix is like use UEFI boot, disable fast boot and if that doesn't work buy a new motherboard. -
EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:40:05 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man yes, generally for boards manufactured after 2018 you want:
uefi boot only, ie disable legacy boot.
disable the fast startup / super fast start up / fastboot bios options.
those are usually the first and second stones to stumble upon.New Janny in Town likes this. -
New Janny in Town (mk2boogaloo@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:40:46 JST New Janny in Town @EdBoatConnoisseur @Zergling_man hold up I don't think this board was made after 2018, why? Because I'm using a sandy lake CPU. -
EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:40:56 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo @Zergling_man the uefi options are a start and something to discard, preferably first as it costs no money to change those, then if changing them doesn't work it is something happening either at the graphic card or motherboard.

Zergling_man (zergling_man@sacred.harpy.faith)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 20:51:32 JST Zergling_man @EdBoatConnoisseur @MK2boogaloo Could even be PSU failing, though in that case simply having the card plugged in would cause a problem I guess. New Janny in Town likes this. -
