For me, I tried remembering them as diagonals rather than individual directions. Left and right are easy because their position matched the direction (despite L meaning right) -

In all programming languages I've ever heard of, the start of a line is left and the start of a file is top, so movement to the right (keys K and L) should be considered movement further towards the end of the file (down, right).
