     looking back ICQ and AOL probably just ripped off XMPP

     @charliebrownau @graf ICQ was originally released years before XMPP's time. The functionality of ICQ and other IM systems in the 90s inspired the creation of XMPP/Jabber.
     
     Edit: AIM also existed before the first XMPP draft.

     I used Miranda IM on Windows pre Linux era

     Looks like a fork called Miranda NG exists and besides ICQ and other stuff it supports XMPP
