"The media has done a great job overlooking Trump’s statements and cherry-picking one reasonable thing he said out of a pile of excrement proves he’s a changed man. But they’re really going to have a hard time with this one."
~ Mark Sumner

"The campaign knew it was a disaster before it was even over. What was supposed to be an hour-long question-and-answer session was abruptly cut short by Trump’s campaign after just 34 minutes—'an indication of how much of a train wreck it was for him,' tweeted Axios reporter Sophia Cai, 'and also how good the questioning was.'”
~ Joan McCarter
"And while Harris has, to date, not been a particularly assured politician, she seems to know instinctively how to handle Trump. With a smirk that does more work than all of Clinton or Warren’s earnest attempts to debate him, Harris meets Trump at the demotic level and states the bleeding obvious: 'These guys are weird.' It works because it’s true, but also because she’s doing the thing Trump hates above all other things: she’s laughing at him."
"Harris looks like his worst nightmare: a former attorney general of California in heels, slick, telegenic, with a corporate image and politics that have been largely in the centre – so that when Trump says 'She is a radical left lunatic who will destroy our country,' he sounds ridiculous."
~ Emma Brockes
"The only authentic truth for Trump is whiteness. White Christian people are the only ones who are entitled to real selves, which means they define who is and is not real. Trump is the fascist leader embodying the white volk, which means he’s entitled to define everyone else."

As Nicole Lafond and Emine Yücel note, when Kamala Harris began her run, Republican leaders in Congress put out a memo urging GOP folks not to attack Harris on grounds of race or gender.
But no one seems to have given Trump that memo, as Lafond and Yücel demonstrate by highlightling what Trump said at NABJ yesterday.
"This NABJ interview is a great example of why the people who demand that we deplatform Trump are wrong. People should see this! A grumpy, cruel, hard-of-hearing, race-baiting, asshole having to actually answer for his track record in an environment outside of his comfort zone."
~ Tim Miller as quoted by Maya Boddie
"Anyone in the press who said Trump had changed and become more serene and unified after his assassination attempt must resign. Please, just leave this profession. Find money and influence elsewhere. Also, anyone who remains in this profession, please finally pay attention to Trump and learn from your colleagues’ mistakes. This is what and who he is."
Remember Natalie Allison telling us he has a "new softness" and is spiritual now? I remember.
"Trump, a privileged white man, told a crowd of Black journalists that a Black-Indian woman running for President wasn’t really Black because she also identifies as Indian and then, somehow, only turned Black for the sake of opportunism even though she went to a historically Black college and pledged at a Black sorority. Apparently, he hasn’t met anyone biracial."

"He also can’t grasp how a daughter of an Indian mother and a Black man can self-identify with two races and be recognized and celebrated as such by a diverse, multicultural American in which nearly 34 million people are now biracial.
When you’re all out of juice, you have to resort to what’s worked in the past. For Trump, that’s racism. He’s a one-hit wonder."
And another headline, this one from Huffington Post right now:
The headline for Inae Oh and Julianne McShane's report at Mother Jones on Trump's appalling behavior at NABJ neatly sums things up:
"White Man Tells Black Journalists His Black Opponent Is Not Black"

"Going up against a Black woman brings out the absolute worst in Trump. Hopefully Americans are smart enough this time to see his crude racism and misogyny for what it is. He’s certainly not disciplined enough to hide it."
"Based on social media posts and statements by Trump surrogates, it is clear the campaign believes that focusing on Kamala Harris’s racial identity is a winning strategy. Only a white billionaire living in a bubble of sycophants would believe that strategy will increase his chances of election."

"While it’s tempting to believe that there’s a method behind Trump’s madness, this seemed to me like little more than desperate flailing from a guy who thought the presidential election was in the bag two weeks ago but now feels it slipping away along with his polling lead."

"The photo shows Scott, in blue and two other Black journalists who were on the panel questioning Trump leaving the stage as Trump is left staring silently at the audience, which was hostile throughout. ...
Reports from Washington have said that the Trump campaign has tried to steer him away from attacking Harris on the basis of her race and gender.
That went out the window in Chicago today."
“VP Harris has Trump on the ropes. He will never debate her because he’s scared of her because he knows she will mop the floor with him.”

"Not knowing how to attack a Kamala Harris, Trump appears to be melting down."
"We all know Trump is a racist, misogynist, and an antisemite. But in past years he’s expressed such bigotry just enough to excite his base while covering himself with 'I was just being sarcastic,' or 'it was taken out of context.' And the media allowed him to get away with it.
No longer. Now that he’s running for president against a Black woman, the media isn’t buying it."
~ Robert Reich
“I think we’re getting the first view of imploding Donald Trump as he realizes that what was his for the taking ten days ago is slipping away and he’s likely to go to prison rather than the White House. He [is] being dominated and humiliated by Harris and he’s losing it.”
~ Josh Marshall as quoted by Heather Cox Richardson
"It is unlikely that his insults and naked racism will appeal to anyone but his base, making his performance, as Jessica Tarlov put it on the Fox News Channel, 'a complete, absolute dumpster fire.' It is possible that Trump has lost the ability to read a room and reassure his audience that he’s a good bet."

"But it is also possible that Trump cannot bear to see the enthusiasm building behind Harris, not only because of its electoral meaning, but also because it reveals how small his own following is and how much people loathe him."
Aaron Rupar provides helpful video coverage of Trump's self-immolation at NABJ yesterday.
"Trump did not try to walk his comments back. He doubled down on social media. ...
It’s okay to call the racist a racist. In fact, it’s something we’re morally obligated to do. The fact that Trump doesn’t like it makes it all the more important to speak truth to would-be power, especially when the racist wants to be president.
Ultimately, Trump’s own people took him off the stage today. But it’s up to us, the voters, to do that in November."
"By now you've probably seen clips from the interview Donald Trump gave on stage at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago today. It was appalling. The only thing worse than the overt racism that came out of his mouth was his apparent belief that he could get away with it."
