@arstechnica Do we really need regular software updates for a mouse?
@arstechnica
Fuck this.
@arstechnica f that nonsense
@arstechnica admission: I’m still using the same wired usb mouse that I got in 2001, I’ve tried using various BT/wireless mouses over the years, but just keep going back the reliable wired mouse. Often battery/connectivity issues, I would end up digging the old mouse out. Eventually, I just didn’t put it away, because it’s never let me down. I like it so much now, I bought a back up on eBay for $10 from an ewaste recycler. So Logitech, fuck right off.
@arstechnica At work I use a 23 years old mouse. I guess that already counts as a forever mouse? But without any stupid subscription.
So not interested.
If the mouse is free and the subscription cost less than a mouse would over say,10 years, then ok. But that's not going to happen.
So I have an eternal finger for them...
@arstechnica wow, something i didn't think i needed or wanted but that they're planning to do anyways!
@arstechnica what the hell
@arstechnica Nope. Get fucked.
@arstechnica "Exec says mouse that requires a regular fee for software updates is possible.".
Software updateS. Plural. For a mouse.
E-waste and overengineering
@arstechnica okay, so (silly me), when I read “forever mouse” I immediately thought okay, they will make parts and manuals available and design the product to be easily repairable. But no, instead it ignores that as the reason that people stop using mice and instead makes it e-waste when it is tied to a server somewhere that will inevitably be shut down. No thanks!
@arstechnica Or, you could just buy a mouse and be done with it. They're not even that expensive! "Subscription" indeed.
@arstechnica … or we could just buy a ‘fair mouse’ https://www.nager-it.de/en
@arstechnica This ever increasing corporate greed is disgusting. 🤮 Capitalism has jumped the shark!
@arstechnica I'm a geek who spends a lot of my free time with my PC, but news like this makes me want to rebuild my granoarents' cabin and go live without electricity for a while.
This is happening all the time, greedy corporations push things that we neither need nor want, until stupid people start buying it and then we all have to live with it.
And the only reason I'm replacing my mice is because they stop working properly.
@arstechnica Giggle... i think i'll stop reading your posts - for today. This one was... enough.
