@arcana @tk @allison he was definitely a observant jew but also pretty split from rabbinic judaism imo

Rabbinic Judaism has some crazy contradictions. Like how you can use a Shabbos Goy to get around Sabbath prohibitions even though the Torah also forbids your slaves and domestic animals from doing work. There's no reason to think the same shouldn't apply to hired workers.

Jesus was inconvenient so he got caught up in scrutiny for a lot of contradictions in the law that would have been ignored for most Jews at the time when they’d come up. Rigid systems crumble when the contradictions are also rigidly enforced. Amy engineer can confirm these collision circumstances will blow up a machine in a hurry.

@ArdainianRight @tk @leyonhjelm @arcana @allison I can guarantee there's probably 20 or more pages of talmudic pilpul addressing exactly this topic but I'm too lazy to look it up

@ArdainianRight @tk @leyonhjelm @arcana @sun The technicality is that you're not hiring the workers, you're simply offering them a share in the Shabbos feast (typically some amount of challah) which can then, later, if the shabbos goy so desires, be resold for cash.
