     i tried to recreate our convo but lost it so whatever. THey don't get it, when a kid is sitting there saying "what's in it for me" you can't get him to "man up because those are our ALLIES! We HAVE to support them, they care about freedom™!!!"

     We don't share your civnat religion, we aren't even the same team. Kids have been assiduously sliced into a thousand subdemographics, there's no grand WE to draw upon and mobilize them for your own ends.

     - Taiwan cares about FREEDOM
     - American FREEDOM is the shining exemplar, to the point of being worthy of our religious fealty to the cause of expanding its purview
     
     then if that doesn't work, they go for the "logical" approach:
     
     - Taiwan makes electronics
     - You kids want new electronics to play video games
     - If Taiwan "falls" then there's no more electronics and the economy dies because nobody gets new chips
     
     The ones who are particularly apt will try to tell you that the chinks there are "just like you and me" and they're embattled patriot underdogs fighting against the communist regime, fighting boldly to the end against impossible odds just hoping the US navy breaks through to relieve them in their quest for FREEDOM™.
     
     They flip if you even hint at the idea that the average chink there is better aligned with their chink cousins 100 miles north, they've gotten them to buy off on the idea we're kindred souls despite an entire globe and cultural gulf between us....because they want "freedom".

     Multigenerational military family halted in the span of 2 presidents, but the older guys think that a trump win would turn it around and get junior to keep the tradition alive

     it might be targeted at raising pro gay liberal sentiments but i think the taiwanese know how to keep it at least somewhat subtle

     also I’m wondering if the volume of media consumption has had an effect. when you hear that the world is ending every day, do you think it has a numbing effect on young people whereas boomers were more prone to believe doomsday propaganda and enlist in the military?

     @suquili I work with too many post military cold war boomers, so my take is colored by them quite heavily. In the liberal ones I've seen a kind of sorrow, where they were so fearful of the end they didn't live sometimes.

     But the warboomers will sometimes bay for war, they need it. They were raised in the shadow of their 'greatest generation' grandfathers, and told they had to prove worthy of that by outdoing their courage in WWIII when the day came.....but it never came.

     So they're like labradors, raised in a tiny yard to hunt ducks, never actually let out beyond the fence to do what they were bred for, endlessly chewing on a decoy
