Case Blue required the capture of Astrakhan, which would've stretched the German lines even thinner and rendered them wide open to any kind of Soviet counterattack. The Allies' main contribution in the war effort was blockading Germany from trade, with the lack of oil debilitating German maneuver warfare and logistics - the pillars of the war in the East.
