in march 2022 i needed a new mouse and bought the endgame gear xm1r and it has developed issues with the scroll wheel that interfere with my kicad work (it randomly jumps up when scrolling down). i found a firmware update that is supposed to address this issue, but it comes as a windows exe, so totally unusable for me, even with wine (wine doesn't seem to support direct USB access). this is the kind of hw design that makes me quite angry, to be honest

I'm struggling to think of a device failure that occurs over time but can be repaired by a firmware update...Have you torn it apart yet?

One of the reasons I really like my ZSA Voyager keyboard is the fact that it uses QMK firmware and has regular key switches. Even if ZSA would go under or whatever, I can continue using my keyboard as intended. I have the convenience of a high quality pre-built keyboard with great tooling, without being held hostage by the company that created it (e.g. with proprietary drivers or custom switches). Win-win. They don’t make mouses, unfortunately.
