THE BIGGEST WILDCARD WITHIN GAMING IN WHAT A DIGITAL AVATAR REPRESENTED WAS THE MMORPG GENRE, WHICH ALLOWED FOR COMPLETE DISSOCIATION FROM YOURSELF WHEN IT CAME TO THE CORE GAMEPLAY (WITH HEAVY RPG ELEMENTS) YET ALLOWED FOR YOU TO SIMULTANEOUSLY EXIST COMPLETELY AS YOUR IRL SELF WITHIN THE SOCIAL SYSTEMS THAT EXISTED WITHIN THE GAME
NATURALLY AS OUR SOCIETY'S PRIDE AND HUBRIS REACHED A CRITICAL BREAKPOINT THE MMORPG GENRE HAD TO DIE AS THE RPG ELEMENTS REMAINED COMPLETELY SKILL-BASED, WHILE SOCIALLY YOU HAD TO EXIST IN A SOMEWHAT COMPATIBLE FORM WITH OTHERS TOO. LIKE YOU SAID NORMIES DON'T WANT A PLAYER'S GAMING OR SOCIAL SKILL TO BE PART OF THE EQUATION, ONLY IDEALIZED FORMS OF THESE THAT DO NOT ACTUALLY EXIST
AND SO THE ACTUAL RPG ENJOYERS ENDED GOING FULL UNAGAMER WITH DOZENS OF TREE CHOPPING SIMULATORS THAT REQUIRE A MULTITUDE OF CAREFULLY BALANCED STATLINES TO BE MAINTAINED SO YOUR DIGITAL AVATAR CAN SQUAT IN A DARK LOG FORT IN RELATIVE PEACE
FPS GAMING HAS GONE THE SAME ROUTE WITH FULL ARCADE-NORMIE FRIENDLY STYLES, THEN STRAIGHT TO RPG CHARACTER SHEET HUFFING AND PUFFING SIMULATOR SHOOTERS. IN THIS CASE I ACTUALLY SUPPORT THE ARCADEY GAMES BECAUSE IT ENDS UP MORE ABOUT SKILL THAN SHOOTING+LOOTING "SIMULATORS" WHERE SQUATTING UNDER A BUSH FOR 20 MINUTES WAITING TO SHOOT SOMEONE WHO DARED TO HAVE FUN (MOVES AROUND) IS CONSIDERED GOOD GAMEPLAY. I MAY NOT RELATE TO THIS GENRE WELL THOUGH BECAUSE IT HEAVILY CATERS TO PREVIOUS FAST PACED FPS PLAYERS WHO HAVE SINCE GAINED A LOT OF WEIGHT AND TAKEN ON A SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM SO THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE FAST GAMEPLAY - IN THIS SENSE THE SELF-INSERT AVATAR IS ONCE AGAIN REALIZED

@nugger THE SELF-INSERT OF THE PLAYER ONTO THE PLAYABLE CHARACTER HAS BECOME THE STANDARD IN RPG GAMING (AND ESPECIALLY TABLETOP RPG'S) SO ACTUAL RPG GAMES STRUGGLE TO ALLOW FOR A STAT SYSTEM WHICH ALLOWS FOR MEANINGFUL PROGRESSION BECAUSE ANYONE ABOVE CASUAL-NORMIE IS GOING TO GRIND & BREAK THE SYSTEM, AND SO THE RPG PANDERS TO THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR WHILE CREATING SEMI-INVISIBLE ROADBLOCKS THAT MAKE SURE GRINDERS CAN'T DO ANYTHING TOO MEANINGFUL
EVEN IN STUFF LIKE ELDER SCROLLS GAMES LOOK AT THE GAMEBREAKING DIFFERENCE POTENTIAL AS THE SERIES WENT ON (AND SKYRIM WAS FINISHED OVER A DECADE AGO BEFORE THIS GOT REALLY BAD)
THE CRAFTING-SURVIVAL GENRE APPEARED TO FILL THIS NICHE AND ALLOW FOR ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAT COULD BE FELT. BUT THERE ARE RARELY MEANINGFUL GOALS (BAD STORY, BAD MULTIPLAYER) AND SO THEORYCRAFTED BUILDS AND THE MIN/MAXERS WHO ENJOY THEM ARE ALL THAT'S LEFT AND SO THE GAMES ARE DEFEATED ONE BY ONE IN RECORD TIME
I HESITATE TO CALL COD OR OTHER SUCH GAMES AS HAVING BIG "RPG ELEMENTS" SO MUCH AS A VISIBLE AESTHETIC/SOCIAL REWARD DOPAMINE DRIP, AT LEAST THEY'RE HONEST AND CALL PROGRESSION "PRETIGE" - A VERY SKILLED PLAYER WITH A HANDFUL OF UNLOCKS CAN DOMINATE IN THESE GAMES WITH NO USE FOR THE REST OF THE ALLEGED RPG ELEMENTS SO THEY AREN'T EVEN A THING IN THE TRUE SENSE

An ironic progression of the player-player character relationship, "role-playing" is supposed to be a player taking on a role, as in different from themselves. Players were given customizable PCs because the audience were the tabletop nerds, RPGs in vidya used to be as niche as their tabletop pen and paper counterparts, so they came in with the expectation that they would be creating a character to play as who isn't literally them. Then they became mainstream and the normies and brownoids treated their character as an extra social media account, just an avatar to act as an idealized form of themselves. The old school role players are still out there, but they remain on the fringe as always, while the basic mechanics of "RPGs" have grown to become ubiquitous to gaming.

WHICH IS A TERM ARPG PLAYERS USE TO REFER TO LAYING OUT AN ENDGAME BUILD AND A LEVELLING AND GEARING GUIDE YOU'D FOLLOW TO GET TO THAT ENDGAME BUILD.
THERE YOU GET STAT ALIGNMENT VIS A VIS GLOBAL BONUSES/MULTIPLIERS FOR ELEMENTAL RESISTANCES AND DAMAGE TYPES AND OTHER SUCH "DERIVED/SECONDARY STATS"
