You ever have one of those days where you discover that work's u-matic deck is dead, and you're gonna have to lug yours out of storage just to play a u-matic tape?
Does that happen to anyone else?

@1000millimeter I work for the internet archive!
@foone Wait. You have a job that includes working with U-Matic tapes?
@1000millimeter April, I think? It's a temporary thing for now. I've mainly been scanning supreme court microfiche
@foone Cool! Since when?
@NanoRaptor Sometimes I'm not sure what decade I live in.
specifically, I can't figure out if it's the 80s or the 90s.
Right now I've got a laptop, but I'm scanning microfiche, so... I'm leaning early 90s?
@foone The last time something even close to that happened to me was 1988.
I've got a mysterious U-matic carrying case containing a 3M UCA 60 Videocassette Color Plus.
All that's on the label is "5-01-86 DS".
@mediaarchaeologylab yeah that makes sense
@foone sometimes
@foone I think you live fully.
Most of us use cars in the last decade, houses from the last 50, clothes from the last 5, computers from the last 3, food from the last year.
But some of us are dedicated enough to pick through it all. Consciously and fully.
(more earnest than I expected to be on a friday morning tbh. Except maybe the food thing. But if I could get ETA Ripples here easily again I would...)
@NanoRaptor I try to! Even if it's in the past.
@foone if your deck doesn't grok it, mine might.
What made me think I'm the only one around here who has their own U-Matic? I kinda wish mine could record too though, I'd put video through it for aesthetic degradation
@foone if they need belts for it or repair, Zin VTR Works is fairly local
