Simply reading the law he was convicted under is enough to see it goes against the intentions of the Framers of the Constitution. They would never have written the Interstate Commerce clause, had they known it gives the central government virtual life or death power over every citizen.
Of course, if there was a government that explicitly said it had total power, it would be far less tyrannical, because everyone would know the sovereign was responsible for his decisions.
