Given the choice between using a graphical user interface (GUI) or a command-line interface (CLI) app for completing tasks on your #macOS, #Linux, #FreeBSD or Unix desktop, which would you prefer? Why?

Harm (flipsels@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 17:27:56 JST Harm @nixCraft Depends on the task you have to perform. I'm used to work cli only on remote systems, but sometimes a gui is better, esp. when working on graphs and trends

SilentMobius (silentmobius@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 20:08:07 JST SilentMobius @nixCraft It depends on the detail of the task, I might make a lot of CAD models in Fusion but also spend a lot of time in Openscad for some projects. Also there's the question of task that need quick visual feedback. Is there a tool that acts as a plugin-able viewer that can receive data from a pipe, with progressive rendering that handles premature closing of pipes. Something that could display tabular data, PDFs, images, HTML, 3D models, sound, or just a A hex dump

Blakeyrat (blakeyrat@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 21:52:27 JST Blakeyrat @nixCraft Guessing there's a Linux penguin on your account name I'm guessing the answer is CLI CLI CLI CLI CLI! But if that's your answer that means the only "tasks" you're doing consist of munging text around.
You're not making music, you're not editing video, you're not creating paintings. You're not doing any of the great amazing things people SHOULD be doing on computers.
So there's really only one answer for a well-rounded human being.
