   I think twitter and tik-tok being big centralized platforms have perpetuated this bandwagon culture of people who will post about/interact with a fandom without actually engaging in the media the fandom is based on.
   
   Ppl will say it's mean to shit on ppl who wear shirts from bands they've never listened to, but it's getting to the point where you have ppl saying their persona fans despite only ever reading the wiki and being a joker main in Smash.
   
   I'm starting to see these "parallel fandoms" where you have "fans" who enjoy the art, fanfics, and memes of a media rather than the canon media itself.
   
   And it's all because an algorithm pushes the current Thing Of The Now to everyone regardless of any previous interest. You then have random content creators who just shoe-horn in the current thing for views while the hype is fresh and this all gives a false impression of the thing their posting about.

     That's true. A lot more people are aware of stuff that used to be obscure, I guess what I mean is that I used to be able to find places where people would actually engage further than just posting memes. I think this drowns out people who actually want to talk about stuff, that's definitely how I've felt in the last several years.

     Among those that actually have played/watched/whatever, even less actually engage much further than that. I feel like you used to be able to find fans in "normie" spaces and talk about plenty of more obscure but adjacent stuff. Now if it isn't the most popular recent entry or the subject of some youtube essay or meme no one cares.

     I think this is a symptom of the current centralizing of the Internet. Cuz back then you had to find dedicated fan forums and sites for something and they were deep into it cuz they had the autism to post on some obscure site.
     
     Now you have to share a playpen with everybody and you don't know who actually cares about what you're talking about.

     @Tsuki @Weeble The other thing with normie interest in something is that it is very much passing. Even when the media control was more centralized, "flavor of the month" was a very real thing. Some community will talk about a TV show or game for a month or so and then move on. Even if it lasts years, something like Undertale came and went as an example.

     @Tsuki @Weeble Plus with the PC-98, even when YouTubers do video essays or reviews of a game on it, the elephant in the room is that said people will only care about that one game or maybe download an emulator for it and nothing else.
     
     Touhou is a grade-A example of this. More people know what Touhou is over what the PC-98 is. You have to be balls deep in that scene to even know about it in the west, and only because of the sequels for Windows and the fan material (and it's already a notorious joke that Touhou fans don't play the games).

     Superficial is a good way to describe it. Memes and video essays have deluded so many things In the public conscious. Some youtube guy makes a video with a million views exaggerating a few moments in a game you like and now those moments are all it becomes.

     And by false fan I don't just mean "a 'star wars fan' whose only seen the disney movies" or whatever.
     
     I mean Hetalia fans who hate Hetalia but like their own version of it.
     
     I mean the Danny Phantom fan whose only frame of reference is Danny Phantom Fanfics.
     
     I mean the Danganronpa fan who realized their favorite character is shit cuz they finally played the game after talking about it for 2 years.
     
     And I think the only reason they feel compelked to call themselves fans in the first place is because of FOMO and their twitter timelines gave them a false impression of what the media is actually like.
     
     This has been happening even with older shit because evrrything is so accessible now.

     @Weeble I think a lot of it is actually just the same phycology as the vain fakeoid people who used to pretend to watch sports or some popular tv show 20 years ago, but now because these formally obscure things have been more normalized they do it here as well. So it's not really a new phenomenon, but just is a result of the old mainstream collapsing, so the locusts move on to the next thing.

     Yeah, but back then a multitude of insulated subcultures existed in parallel to that normie mass. Even when a particular creation of one of those subcultures received viral attention it wouldn't kill the subculture behind it.
     Nowadays this normie mass, and the accompanying memeplex, feels like the end all, be all, of the entire culture.
     
     I don't even know where to start analyzing it.
     From the stream of slop products made to order for this normie mass while sabotaging all other creation as competition.
     To very few subcultures still managing to have enough depth, a couple of them are anime and the sexual lgbtqawtfbbq ones.
