   people who are doing okay and haven't been fucked by the system will always defend the system on some level because they need to believe they're being rewarded for working hard and making the right choices, not just lucky

     I haven't been fucked by the system because I knew not to draw attention to myself. I learned quickly and early to be as independent from it as possible, and I've found avenues where working hard does net benefits, but that's completely outside of this dichotomy your post draws.
