   Trying to imagine the confusion of someone who sees me open a message from my mom, wince in cringe pain, and spy THIS over my shoulder

   I have an exaggerated distaste of the veteran honor culture, I know. But it IS too much. I guess I see it like welfare - the people who most deserve the service least deserve it. The most brutally abused veterans, the guys who suffered the most out of all their brethren, are never the guys walking around in public with a "VETERAN" hat.

   I guess that's my beef. I hate it, I hate the cult of worship so desperate for glory and vanity it bends over backwards to coddle the exact team of guys who everyone hated on deployment.

     Veterans I know I'm a dick to you guys sometimes but come on. You're embarrassed by this, right?

     You wouldn't take a week off work to go listen to a holocaust speaker and buy your own hotel room just because an "honor flight" is giving you a free economy seat on southwest, right? You'd roll your eyes at being photographed next to a "therapy dog" like this as if you're a 10 yo downs' patient, right?

     It's just all so tasteless, gauche, and cheesy. I'd be disgusted just thinking back of those worst, most miserable days when you're daydreaming about being home for christmas, this insults them with its faggotry

     Yes, that is insulting.
     
     The problem with VA benefits is that the guys who need it the worst are also the worst at fighting the system.
     
     That's what the wounded warrior project does. For free, the WWP helps vets file paperwork to get stuff like healthcare, but the big thing is disability benefits.
     
     Vets should be honored, but our military should only be fighting defensive wars, something it hasn't done in over a century.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot I think veterans (especially those who recently separated to avoid the shots) are increasingly shy about flaunting that status. Many had no idea what kind of system they were supporting while they were in and wish they could tell all the people cheering them on afterward that they are all part of a collective brainwashing and that the military is not the institution it used to be.
     
     And, in some sense, the military didn't even "used to be" the system it used to be (that is, its members and supporting public have always had the wool pulled over their eyes about what the military actually accomplishes). That's not to knock the good intentions of the enlisted and junior officers, though. Most are only told a small part of the bigger picture, and it's always spun as a "freedom and democracy" thing.

     100 years ago, Smedly Butler, the most decorated marine at the time and author of "War is a Racket," wrote about how even then deployments to Latin America were entirely about securing more favorable deals for American businesses and nothing to do with protecting the American people.
     
     The American military has always been a mercenary organization, even back in the colonial days when it existed to protect East India Trading company interests.
