vic (vic@seal.cafe)'s status on Wednesday, 22-May-2024 03:03:59 JST vic @threat Before cable internet, computers were basically a fancy extension to the phone system. Local calls were free, whereas long-distance (outside area code) had fees.
That created the perfect condition for formation of local communities--people who would not just talk to one another on BBS threads, but who would actually meet up regularly and enjoy whatever it is they were into.
It seems to me that the end of cohesive society happened when it became more normal to NOT know (or at least have some real-life connection to) the people on the internet with whom you talked.- † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.
