   America not formally having a state church doesn't change the reality that religion is a foundational glue of society, and not simply a private matter. If the community is devoid of piety or a strong and healthy shared value system it cannot flourish. While religion may also provide solace and strength for the individual in times of wickedness and immorality, this does not change the reality that there will be consequences for said wickedness and immorality extending beyond the individual. Any society throughout all of human history that could reasonably be described as healthy and growing would be seen by Clown World as intolerably theocratic and fascistic.
