Honestly I’ve never liked a girl who says “I’m a good woman! Like, I’d make the most amazing wife!”
Maybe it’s true sometimes but I don’t like that level of bragadoccio in a girl. I like her humble and just a little too hard on herself, because those types of girls so often have a very outward looking heart. I love to spoil and coddle my girl, but it’s very easy for that to go awry when they have an ego or a lot of greed inside them.

The humble girls are better because you can say “hey, you said you never went to disneyland, right? Pack up we’ll leave in a few hours” and they’ll feel a little reticent to take so much from you, like it’s ‘too much’. They’ll feel like they don’t always deserve the special treatment, and that’s why you know they totally deserve it.

I guess it’s the meme of “lord have pity on me, a humble retard” in the world of dating. But the most important thing in a wife that I could possibly find is a kind, selfless heart. And you don’t too often find those on people who think they’re perfect as they are.

@BowsacNoodle @berkberkman I see the tendency for single gals to wear the ‘captain’s hat’ in life when they don’t have a man in the house. She has to put on this somewhat manly affectation in order to live and survive, even if it doesn’t come naturally to her. Once a man comes into the picture (a real man, not one she feels the need to ‘step up’ and mother) she can hang up that role and leave him to take care of it.
That’s the really adorable phenomenon where a woman ‘blooms’ into the best version of herself under your umbrella. You have this nest where she doesn’t have to be guarded and prickly, doesn’t have to be cynical or grumpy, she can just focus on fostering beauty and peace while she nests.

@SpurgAnon I like that impulse. I try to explain that it’s not just for her, but for me too. I like getting her jewelry because it reinforces her position as my beloved woman. It’s appreciation for her and a subtle signal for others because those baubles tell other chicks she’s cared for and adored. (Guys too, but they don’t pick up on those messages b/c they’re too tone-deaf to small social cues)
If that’s not enough I like the heirloom argument. I’m always happy to have more quality stuff because ideally I’ll have 32 grandchildren eventually vying for a piece of something in the family history

@SpurgAnon We have an idea in the family called seasoning. With things of high value, we’re willing to take the hit and pay up because you can only start using it and building its history early on. If it’s a solid, well-made, lasting piece, then you’ll have it forever, and being able to reach into my drawer in 50 years and give my great grandson a watch along with all the places and things it saw adds to its value.
Granted, they don’t need to be too costly. There are many lovely Seikos out there from vietnam, skyrocketing in price just like a rolex of the same vintage. As long as it’s quality.
So just explain to her that the guilt adds to the history. Someday she’ll dangle it before her granddaughters and say “oh I was almost angry he spent so much on this….that was a lot of money back then, but he insisted. Someday when I’m gone I’ll pass it on to you”

@SpurgAnon That’s a relaxing price point. She’s got a very cute, excellent instinct, definitely the one you prefer.
Someday I want to give mine nicer things and dress her up in a way that suits someone in the family. I wanna be able to look at pics in 100 years and say “oh, there’s your necklace! Hey, cool, that’s granddad’s jacket! Wow, we still have most of that!”
But… her jewelry collection sucks right now, so I can’t speak too much on that. I have some stuff in the family but until she’s official I can’t take possession of it, would be improper to go handing off grandma’s ring to a ‘concubine’.
Right now finances are devoted towards home-building, once I get more breathing room I’ll have to get a ring. Not looking forward to THAT shopping spree.

@SpurgAnon I’ve always been a stone guy more than a diamond guy. It’s kind of hard to take diamonds seriously when the synths got so good. Add in the long history of man with precious stones, the color, the presentation, and it seems odd that diamonds hold such esteem.
