Operating systems and adjacent software end user experiences PROS AND CONS
- Linux/BSD pros and cons -
Pros -
Free software, privacy, endless customization, squeeze performance out of old machines. Documentation is decent and you can generally find solutions online too. Helps you understand computers and software more.
Cons -
Stability is hit and miss, software is written by volunteers and can either be extremely good or utter trash, constant wasted time on dealing with problems and bugs, developers in this sphere are constantly reinventing the wheel and it's frustrating.
- Windows Pros and Cons -
Pros -
Awesome software support, they have integrated backwards compatibility into their API so binaries from 15 years ago run still. Fucking amazing. Good sound and graphics support, I think ASIO4ALL is brilliant. Power management on laptops is good too.
Cons -
Ads being inserted everywhere, it's native file manager is ass, it's not private and it's processes can be sluggish and inefficient, Linux has the advantage over this, Windows is just bloated as fuck. So running it offline is optimal and you really are there to use the software and the OS is just an afterthought.
- MacOS pros and cons -
Pros -
Probably the most stable of the OS's, epic sound and video support, music production, video, art, all of it is easy peasy on a Mac. My buddy produces music on his Macbook and it sounds incredible. Mac also has some stellar CPU performance and has been doing good with it's M1 Arm series.
Cons -
Apple spys on you just like Microsoft, the software ecosystem is just a huge cash grabbing paywall gatekeeping system, you pay your way into all the nice features and abilities. So perfect for the Reddit tier CONSSOOOMERS!!

I totally agree. My Linux box has lxqt + openbox and I've been a long fan of that UI. I also like old school i3, with no gaps. That's a classic banger.
-
@charlie_root @Zergling_man Muh dwm, but i3 is fine.
-
@charlie_root You forgot to mention that linux has far and away the best UI, on every DE, despite it being DE-specific things that make it so good. They just all do them because they're good.
-
@charlie_root @Zergling_man Manual tiling is still gay imo
-
@dcc @Zergling_man
i3 got bastardized by the ricer r/unixporn cult of retards. Early i3 (before ricing was popular) was super based and gaps are gay.
