   I think the USAF timeline is like this:

   Shidd, they don’t wanna pay into our immense F-35 slush fund! Hey, make all our top-tier fighters fly patrols over iraq/afghan 24/7, that way we can use up their airframe limits “uh oh congress we REALLY need those F35’s!!! Our fighters are all busted up and old! They’ll fall apart!” Cool now we can get more F35s!

   5 years pass

   Fugg the F35s aren’t working and we can’t get them in time uh….the f22 was canceled? Okay well we can’t buy more F15/16s or else that cuts into our F35 budget Just run computer simulations and say that our used up aircraft can actually fly 4 times longer than they were designed to shit someone actually died because the aircraft came apart okay find out how we can cheaply fix them and add life to our fighters until the magic F35 arrives

   5 years pass

   okay but for real the F35 should have been ready for production like 10 years ago WTF is going on throw more money at it Okay NVM congress is spooked about russia and china so they’re buying us 144 brand-new F-15EXs!!! shidd now they’re only buying 80 of them it’s okay it’s a start then we can con them into buying more until the F-35 is finally ready for showtime
