Two not-overlong human lives ago, stacked end to end. That’s it. It’s not at all inconceivable that someone now in their eighties knew, in their childhood, someone that had been born into slavery. I often sit with this fact. I recommend the practice – it’s sobering.

My great grandmother who died when I was a kid grew up in a home with one of her grandparents who was enslaved, and also married into a family where her father in law was enslaved. American Slavery was NOT that long ago.
