Catholicism is very rich with folk pieties used to convert religious instincts once expressed in pagan ways to the service of Christ. Protestantism dried much of that out, and took the spiritual dimension of life understood both by pagans and Catholics out of their understanding of Christianity, making it much more of a strictly sterile textual religion that shuns iconography. Which ironically was a problem the Jewish religion had which caused it to stagnate, and Christ spoke out against those who were overly concerned with the letter of the law as opposed to the spirit of the law.
