I did look this up b/c I couldn’t imagine how a mammal would be naturally immune to rabies:
Turns out they’re just really rare in the reporting, less than 3% of reported rabies critters. They theorize that the possum’s blood temp is too low for incubation. I’d probably blame behavior, possums are wiley.
The tick study comes from a team planting ticks on caged possums and seeing how many disappeared after a few days. Most did, but that leaves a lot in the air. Ticks are probably groomed out and eaten when convenient, but a lot of work to munch on for them. Probably doesn’t make up the bulk of a possum’s diet when it’s so high-effort, low-yield.
