   I don't think it's a myth. If wealth tends to lead to decadence, the times when we have lots of people sitting around writing about stuff are gonna be at high points where things are starting to stagnate and decline. I'm sure that you can find curmudgeonly people complaining during periods of civilizational upswing, but if history is a series of peaks and valleys, most of the stuff that gets saved and remembered is from those peaks where things are actually stagnating or declining.
