Estimated cumulative hectares burned in wildfires from satellite-detected hotspots in Canada show that almost 4.5 million hectares have already burned in 2023, greater than anything in the past 7 years. In fact (h/t Ryan Katz-Rosene), reliable wildfire burn area records in Canada only go back to 1959. Since then only 6 years have surpassed 4.5M hectares burned: 1980; 1981; 1989; 1994; 1995; 1998 - and that was over the whole fire season! The record is 1989 with about 7.5M hectares.
