I'd say it's in appearance only. Plastic locking tabs on the old Lenovo and HP docks were very fragile and prone to breaking, the many-pin connectors for port replicators also weren't great for long-term cycling and my T60 will die on the spot requiring a full battery pull to reboot if things get a little jiggly with worn-out docks. I'm concerned about USB-C cycles too since I've seen some phones get a little loose, but the Aliexpress magnetic tips have given me a lot of confidence as a convenient sacrificial adapter to keep that wear down.
Screw-lock connectors were pretty nice, I still use D-Subs for some personal electronic gear. They do have the perverse effect of being a bit too strongly attached when things go wrong though, which I wouldn't really want on a laptop in most situations (yeah yeah sometimes the laptop staying connected to something is more important than it not being flung to a hard surface, but that will more likely be a ruggedized work laptop than my personal one)
>I really wanna have at least 1 port on each side of the laptop
Same, I'd like 2 per side to be a common config just for flexibility, I won't even care if they put dumb restrictions on how many can be used at a time to achieve that.
