   Something that people don’t get is how utterly, vitally important his time in WWI was. War is a forge, an experience that throws a young kid outside his depth, equipped with nothing, bereft of every external support he’s ever had, a brutal, peaceless experience that hammers him down into malleable essence to be remade into something greater.

   He was a member of that brotherhood. He saw boys breathe their last while talking about home. He knows the harsh, deep yearning felt sitting in a wet, frigid hole daydreaming about christmas. He understands suffering to a far greater depth than a civilian, he understands what it was like for those boys to pass on hoping someone would look out for their girls back home.
